Orange Base Hospital
A level 4 Obstetric Unit consists of 18 inpatient beds, 4 neonatal nursery beds, and 4 labour and birthing rooms. Calender year 2006 there were 881 births in the Maternity Unit at Orange Base Hospital. As well as providing a service to the local community, this unit takes obstetric and neonatal referrals from all over the Greater Western Area Health Service (GWAHS).
Orange Base Hospital has 180 beds and a major rural referral hospital providing a wide range of services to the communities in the central and western parts of mid west New South Wales.
Orange has a population of approximately 38,000 and is situated 3 1\2 hours west on the Great Western Highway from Sydney. Reasonable travel expenses will be paid and the Greater Western Area Health Service will provide free accommodation for 3 months in the Nurses Quarters with a 50% reduction thereafter.
Orange Base Hospital (OBH)
Orange Base Hospital (OBH) is the largest hospital within Greater Western Area Health Service. It is a 168 bed major rural referral hospital located approximately three hours from Sydney. The hospital provides level 4/5 medical services to the surrounding community.
Orange is located in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. It is a regional centre providing services to the central and western sections Greater Western Area Health Service. The population of Orange is 33912 as at the 1996 Census and is expected to increase to 42,500 by 2021. In broad terms, the population of Orange has more females than males, significant Aboriginal and Non English Speaking Background (NESB) populations. As a service centre, Orange has a significant representation of a number of government departments and agencies (both State and Commonwealth), a number of shopping complexes, a wide range of professional services and primary and secondary industries.
Orange Base Hospital is a one hundred and eighty bed tertiary referral hospital located within Greater Western Area Health Service. It is the major referral hospital within the Health Service offering infrastructure to support all medical specialities exclusive only to neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery. There are continued plans for the redevelopment of the Orange Health campus and introduction of new and improved delivery of health care models and services.

- Emergency Department: Emergency Department has 25,000 presentations each year. Models of Care include fasttrack & 3-2-1. Clinical Initiative Nurses are employed to assist in the management of triage. Critical Care Intensive Care Unit includes Intensive Care beds (5), High Dependency beds (4) Coronary Care beds (5). The Unit also supports telemetry beds (4). The Unit is supported by Intensivist medical staff. Graduate Certificate in Critical Care is available through the unit.
- Operating Theatres: Three Operating Theatres and one Day Surgery Unit. Approximately 6,500 procedures per year including all surgical specialities except neurosurgery and cardiothoracic. Paediatrics Paediatric Unit is a 12 bed unit with an integrated ambulatory care service. Unit manages medical and surgical children and adolescents up to the age of 16 years. Paediatric Nursing Traineeships are provided. Maternity Maternity is an 18 bed unit that had 898 births for the previous calendar year. Midwifery Traineeships are provided and supported by Clinical Education.
- Medical and Surgical: Medical and Surgical wards include Frost (33 beds), Glenroi (33 beds) and Howse (18 beds). Howse ward also accommodates oncology beds (2). Patient throughput is high and is complimented by ambulatory and discharge services. Dialysis Unit Dialysis is a 9 bed unit that provides haemodialysis services to 30 patients. Support is provided to two satellite units within the Area Health Service. Dialysis traineeships are provided.
- Rehabilitation Unit: 17 bed Acute Rehabilitation Unit that focuses on improving patient function post trauma, stroke or neurological disease. Multidisciplinary team approach supported by Specialist medical staff.
- Cardiac Catheter Laboratory: New service opened in September 2005 and completed 466 diagnostic catheters to June 2006. Cardiac stenting procedures commenced in 2007 which is supported by monitored beds in critical care and telemetry beds.
- Ambulatory Care: Ambulatory services are provided to compliment in-patient services to enable patients to be discharged to an appropriate area whilst waiting for transport. Service also enables patients to access treatments on a day only basis.
- Services provided: 180 bed level 4/5 tertiary referral hospital. Services include intensive care, emergency, maternity, medical, surgical, operating theatres, cardiac catheter, ambulatory, radiology, pathology and community based services. Orange is located three hours drive or one hour plane from Sydney.
- Visiting services: Cardiac Stenting service is supported by visiting medical officers from Metropolitan Tertiary facilities.
- Shift Rosters: Shifts vary from 10, 8, and 6 hour's in duration. 10 hour nights are worked and flexible rostering practises are promoted.
- Professional Development and Education provided: Orange has an effective Training and Development plan for the organisation as well as for the clinical streams. Nurse educators are employed working in specific clinical areas including maternity, emergency, surgical and medical nursing, operating theatres, and intensive care and cardiac catheter laboratory. Hospital/MPS Accommodation is in the form of: Caldwell House services the accommodation needs of health personnel who require short-term accommodation. Individual rooms, shared living areas, kitchen, laundry are provided. Nurses can stay up to one month with option of extension to three months on negotiation.
