Scope of Service:
A-1/NNN provides nursing care to ante- and post-partum women and newborns, as well as to patients who are under the services of gynecology and gyne/oncology.

- Use of nursing process: assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation
- Ultrasounds
- External fetal heart rate & maternal uterine contraction monitoring
- Non Stress Testing
- Circumcisions
- Blood sugar stabilization
- Breastfeeding Consultation
- Thermoregulation
- Patient/Family Education
- Maintenance of skin integrity
- Wound Care
- Pain management, including epidural and patient controlled analgesia administration management
- Medication administration
- Administration of blood and blood products
Hours of Operation
24 hours per day, 7 days a week
CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO SERVICE
- Pregnant women who need care for a condition that may have an impact on their pregnancy, delivery, or post-partum period
- Also includes care for their newborns, not requiring intensive care
- Overflow patients with gynecology and gyne-oncology conditions; general abdominal surgery

- 4 Ward Clerks
- 2 PCAs
- 1 Clinical Instructor, shared with L&D (included in the budgeted MSR lines for ND&S)
Staffing is calculated using 6.0 NHPPD. Staffing is provided by multinational registered nurses, (SN1s); utilizing Core Standards, and perinatal guidelines furnished by AWHONN, the American Association of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nurses. The SN1s are assisted by Patient Care Assistants and Ward Clerks, Saudi Health Educators, the Clinical Instructor & Breastfeeding Consultant.
A Charge Nurse is designated for each shift. She shall be responsible for overall supervision and the quality of care delivered by personnel during the shift. The charge nurse will be required to provide patient care as needed to accommodate the fluctuating patient census and acuity.
Shift assignments are made each shift by the charge nurse and are based on the following criteria:
- Acuity of patient's condition and required nursing care
- Dynamics of patient's status, including the frequency with which the needs for specific nursing care activities change
- Complexity of assessment required by the patient
- Type of technology employed in providing nursing care
- Degree of supervision required by each nursing staff member based on the previously assessed level of competence
- Availability of supervision appropriate to the assessed and current competence of nursing staff member
- Relevant infection control and safety issues
Method of Adjusting to Staffing Variances
During periods of high census/short staffing, additional staff are provided. Staff are cross-trained between the areas and are re-assigned as needed.
Ante/Post Partum/Normal Newborn Nursery nurses generally float to the following units:
- NICU, ICN
- Labor & Delivery
- D-4/VIP suites
- D3-2, Gynecology
HOW ARE INSERVICES/CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS PROVIDED TO MAINTAIN STAFF COMPETENCY
Continuing education is offered through Nursing Development & Saudization (ND&S) and at the Unit level coordinated by the Head Nurse and Clinical Instructor. Education needs are identified through needs assessment tools, treatment protocols, performance improvement activities, regulatory agencies, new technology, new equipment, new products and individual input and surveys. Topics other than those which are based upon mandates and updated protocols, are also arranged. These may be issues of interest raised by the Unit staff, topics selected from the departments' needs assessment or information of interest or relevance from other departments.

METHOD OF COMMUNICATION WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS
Internal and External Methods of Communication:
Internally and externally, communication is accomplished via direct verbal communication, telephone, fax, intranet and written memos. Staff meetings are held on a monthly basis, or more frequently if required. Collaborative practice meetings are scheduled on a quarterly basis or as required. Other meetings are scheduled as required.
Collaborative Relationships With Other Departments
The Head Nurse and staff participate on many multidisciplinary committees, as well as on Hospital wide performance improvement groups and committees. Representatives from other departments are invited to attend staff meetings when new programs are introduced or if complicated issues arise, to facilitate a mutually desirable resolution.
PLAN TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF SERVICE
- Review patient comments and follow-up as necessary
- Review event notification forms and follow-up as necessary
- Review and revise standards of patient care and clinical practice
- Ensure staff competency via required competency validation
- Offer educational programs to increase staff's knowledge and skills
- Staff participation in staff performance improvement teams
- Expand patient teaching programs and materials
- Renovation of the Unit in order to accommodate the present/future patient populations
- Continue the cross-training program of A-1 staff
