Patient Population

Midwives care for low-risk, uncomplicated term labor cases and normal newborns. Midwives provide total care/delivery to low-risk, uncomplicated patients and their newborns. When midwife patients are unavailable, the MW will function in the role of an obstetrical L&D nurse and will not do deliveries.

Number of Beds

7 L&D, 7 assessment room, 4 recovery room beds and 2 OR's.

Occupancy Rate

100 % - 7,500 delivers per year.

Midwives expected to delivery 30 % of the normal spontaneous vertex deliveries.

Hours of Operation

24 hours / 7 days week - 12 hour shifts rotating days and nights.

Primary Patient Diagnoses / Conditions

Midwives care for low-risk, uncomplicated term pregnancies for labor and spontaneous vertex delivery and the newborn. Obstetrical cases include patients with or without high risk factors such as PIH, HELLP, diabetes, multiple gestation, pre-term labor, etc. Laboring patients with or without pathological conditions e.g. cardiac, renal, neurological, cancer conditions, etc.

• Physical and obstetrical assessment of low-risk labor patients
• IV insertion and maintenance
• IV therapy and medication administration
• Calculation of medication dosage by body weight
• Blood specimen collection
• Fetal (CTG) monitoring and interpretation of strips
• Augmentation of labor by order of physician
• Routine spontaneous vaginal deliveries of low-risk cases with performance of episiotomies and repairs of episiotomy and 1st and 2nd degree tears
• Immediate management of postpartum hemorrhage
• Postpartum assessment and care
• Initial assessment and care of newborn
• Patient teaching and support
• Obstetrical L&D Nurse duties
