Staffing Plan
Staffing is provided by registered nurses utilizing the perinatal guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Registered Nurses are assisted by Patient Care Technicians, Unit Assistants and Health Educators. A charge nurse is designated for each shift. She is responsible for supervision and the quality of care delivered by personnel on her shift. The charge nurse will be required to provide patient care as needed to accommodate the fluctuating patient census and acuity.
Shift assignments are made each shift by the charge nurse and are based on the following criteria:
- Complexity of patients condition and required nursing care
- Dynamics of patient status, including the frequency with which the need for specific nursing care activities change
- Complexity of assessment required by the patient
- Type of technology employed in providing the nursing care
- Degree of supervision required by each nursing staff member based on her previously assessed level of experience and competence
- Availability of supervision appropriate to the assessed and current competence of nursing staff member
- Relevant infection control and safety issues
Method of Adjusting to Staffing Variances
When more staff are needed for the shift than has been scheduled, the nursing shift coordinator is notified of the additional numbers of staff required. Staff are then called in from home, or temporarily reassigned from other areas based on experience and competence. If the unit has an excess number of staff this is identified to the shift coordinator and documented on the shift report. These nurses are then utilized in other areas or banked with a view to rescheduling cover for future shortages. Ideally General Surgical nurses would float to other surgical units. However they may be floated to any service; again experience and competence are factors of consideration.
