More informationIt is a very interesting and exciting time to be a midwife in Ireland. There are many changes occurring within the profession and in the provision of maternity services and the two are inter-linked. Midwives are reasserting their separate professional identity. Midwifery education has gone through a period of change and it is expected that this will continue in the coming years. Community Midwifery Services and Integrated Hospital Community Midwifery Services are developing and becoming established as an integral part of making the health service more responsive to the needs of the population and promoting individual, family and community health and well-being. Other maternity services are looking at ways of providing more choice about the type of care offered and delivered, about who provides it and where. Midwives are actively involved and leading all of these developments. The continuing rise in the birth rate and the changing cultural profile of the population also has had a significant effect on the role of midwives. Most midwives are employed in maternity hospitals or maternity units attached to general hospitals. There are a small number of midwifery led units being developed. Midwives may also practice independently in the community. There are seven schools of midwifery in Ireland and all are situated in healthcare facilities. All offer post registration midwifery registration education programmes in partnership with a linked third level institution. On successful completion the students are awarded a Higher Diploma or Post-Graduate Diploma in midwifery from the third level institution. Pre registration (direct entry) Midwifery Registration Education Programmes are offered from most universities from September 2006 and from one I.T. Following successful completion of the all programmes, students are eligible for registration as a midwife with An Bord Altranais. Last updated: 03.05.2011 |
